Monte Nero

Monte Nero altitude: 2048 mt a.s.l. – Year of formation: 1646

The cone was formed following the eruption of 1646/47 whose lava flows reached Randazzo and Linguaglossa. During the eruption from November 1646 to January 1647,  were emitted 190 million cubic meters of lava.

The origin of the name derives from the black color of the volcanic slag, made even more visible by the absence of vegetation on its slopes.

At the base of the cone, the eruptive fracture of 1923 is visible, characterized by several wells such as “Abisso di Monte Nero”.

Reachable from the tourist resort of Piano Provenzana, it is located in the area of   the “North-East Rift”, one of the most fractured areas of the volcano. Along the “Northeast Rift” area it is possible to find several eruptive fractures and numerous adventitious cones such as Monte Pizzillo, Monte Nero, Monte Frumento, Monte Cacciatore, Monte Timpa Rossa, Umberto and Margherita craters and many others.
